Production Web Traffic Migration FAQ

Answers to some of the Questions you may have about this transition originally planned May 3, 2024 and completed Aug 3, 2024

Friday, May 3 at 5pm EST (NO ACTION REQUIRED BY CLIENT):

  • Q: Will there be an outage?

A: No, there shouldn’t be an outage. We will simply be updating the internet routing for all requests to go through a new path. The internet protocols and browsers are designed to handle this sort of change.

  • Q: What differences should I see in functionality when I hit Learnsoft from normal (just after the load balancer change)?

A: None. Our team will make the change and also test functionality of log in for clients. If you see any changes, you should immediately notify support@learnsoft.com

  • Q: Can I use my existing URLs?

A: Yes, existing URLs will still be valid.

  • Q: Can I use the new URLs and what happens if I use the new URLs?

A: Yes, the new URLS will be live and active. You will automatically get directed to the colocation. URLs in the browser will change automatically if you use the new URL prior to migrating.

  • Q: Does this affect performance?

A: This should have no impact on performance.

  • Q: What is happening with my training content?

A: Nothing as part of this traffic change, but this update will enable us to start serving content from our cloud storage instead of our Colocation facility storage.

  • Q: Will services be running in the cloud environment?

A: Services will continue to run in our Colocation facility until you migrate completely to the cloud.

  • Q: Will notifications go out to users?

A: No, your users should not receive notification about this change.

  • Q: What if I find an issue?

A: Please message support@learnsoft.com immediately to report it.  If the issue is an existing problem or can be replicated in the colocation facility, it will be identified as an issue not related to the traffic change.  If it is related to the move, we will address it and resume testing.

  • Q: Can we elect to not have our traffic re-routed?

A: No. This change is a keystone to moving our infrastructure to the cloud and therefore all traffic must be moved as one. If we see issues we cannot solve, we will engage our rollback plan.

  • Q: Will my advertised URLs still work?

A: Only if the advertised URL is currently working. We have tested and anticipate those should continue to work.

  • Q: Does this mean my site is on the cloud after this?
A: No, this change on May 3 is only a change to routing traffic; migrating your production site will happen as a scheduled maintenance window. View additional information about the site migration.
  • Q: The message said the ftp host is changing, what do I need to do?

A: Go into your settings for the ftp and where it has the host set as lsglm700.learnsoft.com saved, change that to ftp-colo.learnsoft.com
This is only applicable to lms administrators that upload content for courses by logging into the ftp site.

Old Host (URL) = lsglm700.learnsoft.com

New Host (URL) = ftp-colo.learnsoft.com

All other ftp login credentials / information remains the same.

  • Q: Does this also mean I need to change something for my HR feeds or reports?

A: No. HR feeds, reports, and other data are transferred over SFTP using host lsglm731.learnsoft.com, and this is not changing as part of this maintenance.

Definitions for this effort:

Production - what you might have previously referred to as your ‘700 site'. The Production environment is your live site.

Services - automated processes that run nightly or based on events in the platform such as assignment scheduler, notifications, scheduled reports.

Colo or Colocation facility - rented location where physical servers are operated to host sites.

Load balancer - a specialized device that sits between you and the web server group to act as an invisible facilitator, ensuring that all resource servers are used equally. Currently when you go to your URL at lsglm700 you are sent to one of several servers and your url changes based on where you are directed. Our new architecture also uses a load balancer, but it will be more transparent, and your URL will remain consistent. This will allow us to increase resources more effectively as traffic and demand increase on your site.

FTP - file transfer protocol

SFTP - secure file transfer protocol
